why can't we have nice things?

Chiefly due to having other nice things.  The Beijing Olympic Stadium - the Bird's Nest - apparently cost half a billion dollars.  Even if it actually cost twice that, this is approximately the cost of a single underground corridor at the new World Trade Center in New York.  Surely wages and benefits, cleaner air and such account for much of this.
