Western modernity is distinguished in part by the sheer quantity of entertainment ingested by each person, along with other matter designed for mass consumption. It is impossible to see this as either neutral or an entire good, yet it explains much, perhaps most, of our differences with seemingly backwards people of other places and our own past. Indeed, it goes beyond quantity - the chief quality of western entertainment is its capacity, like a powerful glue, to stick and spread. We must be very careful to distinguish our considered mores from our cultural preferences. This is one of many reasons why Westerners must be liberally educated: this work of self-separation.
