The profit motive, of itself, is hardly in need of explanation. It begins with need, then security, then comfort and pleasure, and finally branches into more idiosyncratic satisfactions, of seemingly ratified competence, or of ego, or power. What is harder to explain is the participation of one person in another's profit.
