vaseline on the teeth

A window manufacturer advertises that its windows will turn a "home" into a "living space" and one is reminded that advertising is a dialect.  For, in normal, human dialects of English, a home is better than a living space - the advertising phrase sounds like a step in the wrong direction.  Prisoners and dorm-dwellers have living spaces, but lack the comforts of home.  In the dialect of advertising, though, the expression works.  It shines the idea of home in a way that normal English does not.  Ooh, what a living space!  It wouldn't sell windows to say that "our windows will be an improvement on the windows you have, or, if your home is not yet built, an improvement on the windows you'd otherwise install."
