The most unpleasant boss I ever had made one of the most useful observations I ever heard.  "Derek, you know they say that possession is nine-tenths of the law.  I've found that's about true.  And I've found something else: presence is nine-tenths of possession."  And, over the years since, I've found that to be about true, too.
