formation
What makes my mother happy these days is clearing a path. When I was eleven and twelve, clearing paths made me happiest, too. Paths through the wood, or two paths, meeting at the brambles, passing the lovely stump, with its crumbling interior forming a pool for rain water. Saw and pruning shears, hoe and rake. Birds and rabbits, snakes and ivy.
