No functional system is all even exchange (even over time), nor is any functional system all exchange-agnostic (communistic).  There are ebbs and flows.  This is true emotionally as well as functionally.  One reason for the intensity and strangeness of the right-wing American attachment to the military is exactly this: it is a communal institution to which patriotic homage can yet be paid - a noneconomic element of common life.
