A strong argument for maintaining a degree of ritual in society is that doing so acclimates - and in some measure desensitizes - people to ritual force. A society without ritual leaves people with a compelling yearning that becomes the more powerful, if suddenly engaged, for being unfamiliar. But of course a ritualized society also reinforces the power of ritual. There's a happy minimum of background ritual to be maintained.
